TAIPEI (CNA) — Two of the five Taiwanese who contracted the COVID-19 coronavirus on the Diamond Princess cruise liner were discharged from hospitals in Japan on Wednesday, with the Taiwan representative office in that country ready to make arrangements for them to return home.

The patients, a female and a male in his 40s, were discharged after both tested negative twice for the disease, according to the Self-Defense Forces Central Hospital.

The male, who wrote to President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) about the situation of his 85-year-old father while quarantined on the cruise ship in Yokohama Harbor, has moved into a hotel near the hospital where his father is receiving treatment for the same disease.

“I feel everyone wants us to recover soon, so we have to get well,” the patient said, thanking the hospital and the representative office for their assistance.

He said his father is doing well and has stopped coughing. The other two Taiwanese being treated are a male, sent to a hospital in Nagoya, and a female in her 60s, who is being treated in Yokohama.

Also on Wednesday, a Hong Konger, a Canadian, two Americans and a British national were discharged from Japanese hospitals.

Sources said the medical expenses of the five Taiwanese will be covered by the Japanese government, while the cruise liner will help arrange and pay for their flights home with the help of the representative office.

According to Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), when the patients return to Taiwan they will be taken directly to a hospital for two virus tests to check their health status.

If confirmed healthy they will be allowed to go home for a 14-day period of mandatory self-health management.
