Dev Patel Has Mastered the Double-Breasted Suit

One of our strongest opinions here at GQ is that the suit—even in sneaker-wearing, logo-ified 2019—can still be a powerful, fundamental part of your everyday uniform. That can mean the first suit you’ve bought in decades (and from a J.Crew outlet, at that) becomes your new uniform. It can also mean your fifth, or fifteenth, becomes a way to experiment with what you wear every day. And as Dev Patel showed at last night’s premiere of his new movie, The Personal History of David Copperfield, even your fanciest, most corporate-leaning finance-legend suit can, worn the right way, becomes a legit party suit.

There’s basically only one step involved here: chill out. Lose the tie. Open your shirt a couple buttons. And then…open your blazer. The open-swinging DB conjures images of long-gone mob bosses in oversized tailoring, but Patel proves that—if everything fits like it should—it’s worth a shot at whatever the next red-carpet-grade event in your life is.
